Wednesday morning fire guts Vernon home

On Wednesday a early morning fire has all but destroyed a Vernon area home.

The home in the 900 block of Mount Begbie Drive on Middleton Mountain sustained extensive damage, but all five occupants, including two renters on the lower floor, and some pets, got out safely.

The fire is believed to have started in a basement bedroom.

The residents were alerted to the blaze by smoke alarms and a pet licking someone's face.

Vernon deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood says they're still investigating what the cause of the fire which may have been electrical, but it is not suspicious.

A third of the home was destroyed, there is no damage figure as yet.

The occupants will be staying with relatives, or in hotels, until repairs are made.
