High winds created havoc through-out the Okanagan Thursday afternoon.

But no where more so than on the water.

The wind came up with very little warning shortly past 1:00 pm.

Gusts as high as 55 kilomters an hour were measured at the Kelowna airport, but they are estimated to be much higher on Okanagan Lake.

Many boaters were taken by surprise.

"It was very rough, and scarey, I've been boating for about 30 years and I've never been through anything like that before" said Brian Harms of Kelowna.

"We just got our life jackets on and came back".

Harms was more fortunate than Ryan Huffman.

Huffman was travelling from Kelowna to Penticton in his boat the Rutland Pearl II.

When the wind hit, Huffman headed for shore.

His boat was swamped just off of Gyro beach.

"I got all my valuables off board, and when I turned around, it just sunk" said Hoffman.

There were dozens of boaters caught in the windstorm, all of them were scrambling for safety.

At one point three boaters were missing an unaccounted for near Okanagan Centre in Lake Country.

But after several tense minutes, they were located safe.

The high winds also knocked down several trees.
